Originally formed sometime in July (?) 1940 as part of 23 Australian Infantry Brigade in Victoria. In March/April 1941 was detached from 23 Brigade and sailed to Rabaul in New Britain to reinforce the small garrison there. It did not go to Darwin with the rest of the Brigade. In January 1942, it was forced to surrender to a large Japanese invasion force after some resistance. Some members of the Battalion managed to escape to Australia or Papua. Some of the Battalion were massacred by the Japanese after the surrender. |
