Raised in August 1650 as a Regiment of Cuirassiers at Newcastle by order of Parliament to be commanded by Sir Arthur Hazelrig |

In July 1660, Cromwellian officers replaced by Royalists and redesignated The Royal Regiment |

After being paid off in Bath in December 1660, it was reformed in January 1661 by Col Daniel O'Neele as The Royal Regiment of Horse. Became one of the first Regiments of the Regular Army. |

It was also known as the Oxford Blues after its Colonel, Aubrey de Vere, 20th Earl of Oxford. |
