Westlake and Frederick disagree about this unit. According to Frederick, 5 Essex Rifle Volunteer Corps was renumbered in 1880 as 4 Essex RVC and then became 4 Volunteer Battalion The Essex Regiment in 1883 which then converted to 7 Battalion The Essex Regiment in 1908.
