According to Frederick, 5 Essex Rifle Volunteer Corps was renumbered in 1880 as 4 Essex RVC and then became 4 Volunteer Battalion The Essex Regiment in 1883 which then converted to 7 Battalion The Essex Regiment in 1908. According to Westlake, 5 Essex Rifle Volunteer Corps was renumbered as 4 Essex RVC and shortly after as 3 Essex RVC and then became 3 Volunteer Battalion The Essex Regiment in 1883 and finally converted to 6 Battalion The Essex Regiment in 1908,
