ANGAU was formed to manage the military administration of Papua and New Guinea following the collapse of the civil administration in early 1942. As part of its duties, its officers and men were involved in many long-range patrols and observation duties deep behind enemy lines. |

The vast majority of its officers and men were civilians who had long experience of Papua and New Guinea either as administrators, district officers, policemen or had worked in mines or plantations before the war. |
